In recent years, mainly due to the heavy influence of Scandinavian childrenswear such as Polarn O Pryet; Uk High Street retailers have embraced gender neutral clothing. Traditionally, this would have been considered 'casualwear' or even....wait for it, 'childrenswear'.  Yes, there is nothing multinationals love more than taking an old idea, repackaging it and then charging us double for the privilege!

In the seventies, kids were all dressed the same regardless of gender.  They were allowed to be kids and the clothes reflected this.  They had to be practical as well as comfortable, plus it was the seventies so the colours and prints were awesome!   Now of course there were dresses and items that were specified for each sex, Victoriana was a huge trend for girls.  So I'm not looking back with rose tinted glasses and I love a good frock as much as the next person but the childrenswear market hadn't yet been tapped in to.  Someone who has taken that 70's formula and shown how successful it can be is Jools Oliver with her Mothercare collaboration 'Little bird'.  Many of the designs are based on original Mothercare design specs.

My main objective is to change peoples perspective of childrenwear by showcasing what is already available.  Who is offering an alternative choice and a change in attitude, for both boys and girls.  It is a real eye opener when you look at other countries and how they present their children, you realise how gender specific the UK is.

Now you may think clothing is irrelevant, but if you put a child inside a box from a young age then their outlook and goals are moulded and ultimately decided for them.  For instance if boys always have 'trouble'or 'mischief maker' on their clothing, what does that instil in the child?  We really need to be conscious of what message we are giving our children.

Anthem of the Ants

Today I saw a sneak preview of the AW13 Range from Anthem of the Ants on the LMNOP Blog (A fantastic Magazine for parents with an eye for style, definitely worth a look so click on the link!) and it stopped me in my tracks.  An amazing collection for little girls that celebrates music and youth, drawing influence from nostalgic childhood memories and the sixties.  Beautiful detailing, with pussy bows / peter pan collars and a fantastic colour palette with great prints.

The styling is lovely, with gorgeous little T-bar / sparkly ballet shoes and coloured tights.  I really love the fact that the garments and prints are quite grown-up, however, there is no mistake that this range is for little girls.  For more details be sure to check out their website here.

The House of Brooklyn Rascals

The House of Brooklyn Rascals started to follow me on Pinterest, so I checked out their boards, pinned most of their pins and then investigated further by visiting their website!

I love the clothing created by  sister-in-law duet Bettina D'Ascoli and Gaby Montiel.  The collection is made up of separates, many of which are reversible!  As you can see from the photos below the garments are unique, quirky and fun.  Perfect childrenswear.  Did I mention that I love it?  I am pretty sure you will too, check out their website, follow them on Pinterest and like them on Facebook!

Corby Tindersticks Part 1

Corby Tindersticks is an illustration led label that produces clothing, toys and posters ethically here in the UK.  We love the quirky characters and the easy going styling as it appeals to both parent and child.  My children are firm fans!     It is really lovely and inspiring to see a different kind of toy / graphics becoming available, especially as it is British.  I feel all too often we overlook our homegrown talent and search elsewhere, yet, we have our own unique, eclectic style that should be embraced!

All the clothing is made from 100% Cotton Jersey and has hand-printed / appliqué  detailing, which gives each item a real original quality.  However, it is the extra detailing that makes this label stand out,  the quality, the labelling, the tags, the topstitching etc  Plus the SS13 Lookbook is full of children enjoying the summer sunshine; there is no overstyling, no pretentiousness and the garments are allowed to speak for themselves.  Check out more here and a big thank you to Louise (Corby Tindersticks Press Officer)
